M3 Binoculars
Westinghouse 1942 WW2: The M3 was
a standard U.S. Army binocular of WWII. It was made by Nash-Kelvinator
and Westinghouse; and B & L, Universal Camera and Wollensak
are also mentioned as manufacturers. B&L and other optical
giants made most of the optics for the various manufacturers.
There were minor differences in weatherproofing, reticles,
and possibly some were coated. The M3 incorporated an improvement,
a set screw to hold the eccentric ring objective cell, to
keep it from rotating during heavy use. The M3 has a 8 degree,
30 min. FOV, an f 4.4 objective, and the reticle is graduated
in mils (horizontal). approx. 300,000 were made during WW2.
These binoculars were issued to USMC, Army and Navy personnel.
This model is in very good condition the carrying
case is almost perfect other than the top carrying handle
retaining strap has snapped. The case is marked 'CASE CARRYING
M17', 'D44160'.
The binoculars are numbered 'No 149625' and
are in very good condition, there is light dust/markings to
the lens but are still useable. The body has a few scuff marks
and abrasions but otherwise in almost new condition. The left
hand lens has a reticle marked in mils (military measurement)
- 6400 mils = 360 degrees. The H.M.R. marking is thought to
stand for 'High Moisture Resistance'. An excellent WW2 binocular
and a reasonably rare item.
